Today, May 17th, we say goodbye to one of popular music’s most influential artist,
Donna Summer, Queen of Disco. Although she gained prominence during the disco era, she also covered rock n’ roll, gospel, and R&B which earned her Grammys in those categories. She was also the first African American woman to have her song “She Works Hard for the Money” (1983) in heavy rotation on MTV. I honestly believe that I was born in the wrong decade, and thanks to technology I have been able to rediscover many artists that go unheard within my generation, like Ms. Summer. If you do not know who Donna Summer is, get acquainted. I am more than sure you have heard her music through other artists, commercials, movies etc. She will never be forgotten.

Zimmerman murders a young male and is protected by the “Stand Your Ground” law while Marissa Alexander does not hurt anyone, fires her licensed gun into the ceiling in attempt to defend herself from her husband hoping that she would be protected by this same law, and does not receive immunity under this law and is now sentenced for 20 years…. How reliable is our criminal justice system?

As a black woman who considers herself relatively conscious, it gets a bit lonely on this college campus.
